Nepal is home to towering peaks and lesser know peaks that are equally challenging and testing. Every year the mighty Himalayas attract thousands of seasoned and aspiring climbers to the test their skill and level of endurance. The country boasts of eight of the fourteen 8000 meter peaks and a countless smaller peaks. In 1978 the Government of Nepal granted some peaks to Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) which are termed as trekking peaks. They are popular with avid climbers and novices alike. These peaks provide an opportunity to climb in some of the most important regions of Nepal like the Everest, Makalu, Dhaulagiri, Kanchenjunga and Manaslu region. These peaks also provide potential for endless new route exploration at an altitude ideal for extreme climbing. A host of popular peaks like Island Peak, Mera Peak, Chulu provide professional climbers with the perfect setting to acclimatize before they venture out to conquer the really "Big Ones". Due to their low altitude they also provide a wonderful setting for amateur climbers to test and hone their skills. For novices they are summits that are within their reach which ones climbed gives them a sense of achievement. A sense of personal satisfaction.
